Being "realistic" - a losing strategy!

Here’s my latest problem. Well, it’s not actually my “latest” problem, it’s been a problem for a long time, and I’m just now getting around to writing about it.

So, here’s my latest gripe with so-called conservatives; I’m going to start calling them the “let’s be realistic” crowd. Yep, when we at The Forgotten Men offer real solutions vs. sophomoric ones, we’re treated to a litany of “Mark, we’ve got to be realistic here!” Really?

Let me use some worn but still true metaphors:

Sports:

After the Cardinals gave up 10 points to the Steelers early in the 43rd Super Bowl, it appeared to most fans that this would be a blowout. However, after a number of big plays, crucial calls, and instant replay reviews, the Cardinals managed to keep the game close.  They were on track to secure the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.  With the Cardinals, the Cinderella story of the year on the verge of pulling out a win, did the Steelers meet during halftime and say “well lets be realistic here guys. They’re playing with more emotion than we are, the breaks are going their way, let’s be realistic and try to get out of here with another field goal if we can. I know, it’s not a win, but there’s always next year and after all, it’s better to just take a step forward rather than think we can win it all!”

Family:

Parents: We understand what it’s like growing up in this hyper sexualized culture and a young person’s desire to engage in sexual activities before they’re married, but your mother and I want you to abstain until you’re married.

Child: Dad, let’s be realistic here, everyone else is doing it and while I agree it’s taken us decades to get where we are right now, it’s going to take decades to get us back where you and mom want things to be!

Parents: Ok honey, we agree, we’ve got to be realistic…here’s a condom. Be safe and have fun! And while you’re out, we’re going to try and meet with other parents to plan our next incremental step back towards abstinence! Wish us luck!

Now, these are exaggerations, I know. But they illustrate a point…being “realistic” is a losing and loser strategy. Thank goodness the Founders did not take that approach!
